In attempting to pull together elements already in the room (square casing and pine plank flooring) I decided on a kind of traditional/modern hybrid design. Using some of the old heart pine 2×4’s from some of my other recent projects for the cabinet tops and a chunky style of floating or ‘bracketless’ shelving I think the design pulled together pretty well. In addition, it was important to maintain the aesthetic of openness or space in the living area. Deciding to have the cabinets freestanding and the floating shelves (without the traditional supporting side pieces) steered away from the built-in-unit look and suggest space where a floor-to-ceiling installation would carve into the square footage of the room. The fireplace surround is abutted granite tile.
