After receiving some turn of the century 2×4s reclaimed from a tobacco barn I decided to build a mantel. It’s always nice to get ahold of some old lumber, and especially when those pieces are aged and tobacco stained studs that are the legit 2 inches by 4 inches. Beautiful! Instead of planing the heck out of each piece, I wanted to see how little of the aged surface I could remove. All I treated the joined pieces with was a satin sheen lacquer. I also reused some of the original nails the I removed from the 2×4s at the corner joints.
